The ANC is a civil society organisation whose main goal is to promote the independence of Catalonia. It was created in 2011, and has since organised many of the key demonstrations of the independence movement. According to the organisation, it counts 80,000 members of which half pay fees. Its first president was Carme Forcadell, who went on to be speaker of the Catalan parliament from 2015 to 2017. She was succeeded at the head of the ANC by Jordi Sánchez, who is currently in prison charged with sedition in connection with a protest that took place on 20 September when the Guardia Civil raided the Catalan Ministry for the Economy.
