Òmnium was created in 1961 to defend and promote Catalan culture and language at a time when its institutional use was prohibited. Today it counts 68,000 members. As of 2013 it stopped receiving subsidies from the Catalan government. Òmnium and the National Assembly of Catalonia are the largest civil society organisations pushing fro Catalan self-determination in recent years. It has played a key role organising a variety of demonstrations since 2012. Òmnium president, Jordi Cuixart, has been remanded in custody and faces charges for “sedition” in relation to events on 20 September 2017, when Catalan government agencies were raided by the Spanish police, sparking spontaneous protests.
