The Popular Party is the largest political party in Spain. Outside of the Basque country, Catalonia and Andalucia it is consistently the most voted party in all other regions. In Catalonia, however, it has always been marginal, polling usually around 10% of the vote. In the 2015 elections the PP obtained 8.5% of the vote, and on 21 December 2017 it is not expected to do better. Its current leader is Xavier Garcia Albiol, who is also a senator in Madrid. He was formerly mayor of Badalona, one of the largest cities in Barcelona’s industrial belt. He became famous at the time for his xenophobic campaign called “cleaning Badalona”, and his many remarks linking immigrants to bad hygienic habits and criminality.
